Reflecting on that made me think of so many efforts being stopped in their tracks. Did you ever find yourself having an idea and loving it, just to hear your mind saying "no, no, no; you can't do it; the time is not right; the situation is not good; who are you to do it; you are not good enough; this is not the way it supposed to look like".... blah blah blah. Ever heard that in your mind? Yap, me too. Wanted it to be perfect!!!
Way more than once, it stopped me from doing many great things and enjoying life, people and things much more.
Most of the time masked or excused under strive for excellence and having high standards, this paradigm has a power to paralyze in the sense of preventing your actions. Of course, there is absolutely nothing wrong with striving for excellence or having high personal standards.
The problem is when those standards are set too high so they become unattainable, and that strive for excellence becomes paralyzing - becomes a barrier to taking action. When that happens, we have a case of special form of anxiety called perfectionism, closely related to procrastination.
Perfectionism - procrastination connection is not easily recognizable to the untrained person. Fear of failure is so wide spread and drilled into our mind that we often choose not to do what we want from the fears of disappointing others.
But guess what - most of the time those others would never say anything as bad as we do to our self in our self-talk or mind chatter. There lays the best test to find out if you have perfectionist tendencies.
Listen to your self-talk and ask yourself: "Would I say this to the other person in same situation or would I be gentler, kinder, more understanding? " After quickly evaluating your self-talk and recognizing you wouldn't say it out loud to someone else, take steps to learn how to heal your perfectionism.
I am healing mine already and can say the more I drop it, the happier I am. I still keep my goals and standards high but they do not prevent me from taking actions to reach them.
This writing is the sample - I am sending it out in its raw version to give my self a permission to be raw me in your eyes. One that makes spelling and grammar mistakes, writes long emails, bothers you in your inbox...
And also one that cares enough to send you this email on Sunday morning just because thinking of you and trying to say - honor the labor of your heart whispering "go for it."
Go after your dreams. With imperfect action. In imperfect circumstances. Don't let the perfectionism to stop you. You can heal it as I am healing mine (so when you see some grammar and spelling mistakes let me know).
Have a happy Labor Day. Go for whatever it is that you are postponing because of "not a perfect time, situation or goal".... Your life is waiting for you to live it the way you want it.
